Global warming, solutions
In early April, HPU sponsored a two-day series of lectures
on global warming by Nobel laureate and internationally
recognized climatologist, Dr. Stephen Schneider. The Melvin
and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental
Studies addressed a crowd of more than 40 people from HPU
and the community, on April 2 at the rRed Elephant in a
lecture entitled “Global Warming: Teaching and Learning
Complex Science without Oversimplifying.” [More]

Aloha
from OI: Raising
Pacific white shrimp
Commercial shrimp producers worldwide continue
to face critical challenges related to disease and negative
environmental impacts. This has prompted farmers and researchers
to develop alternative production strategies, including biosecure
recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). However, production
costs need to be reduced if this technology is to be profitable
and embraced by the commercial sector.

Filipino
Club offers advice on recycling
During April, students will start seeing clear
plastic bins all around the HPU campuses. The Filipino Club,
a.k.a “P2B Pinoy Club,” is managing the bin distribution
to promote recycling as part of the “Sustainable Campus
Project,” currently undertaken by P2B Pinoy, the Green
Club, and the Sustainability Club. This coalition’s
mission is to make HPU a sustainable campus in all aspects. [More]

EarthTalk: Road
surfaces made to generate electricity
Dear EarthTalk: I notice occasional solar panels
on roadsides, powering individual streetlamps or signs. Is
any research being done to expand on this idea and implant
solar collectors in roads, parking lots, or sidewalks to
generate power in a similar but bigger way? — Emily
Eidenier, via e-mail. [More]
