"Battle of the sexes" cast HPU theatre director Joyce Maltby has announced the
cast for this semester’s production of Kiss Me Kate a mid-20th
century musical that critics still call a "battle of the sexes." Based on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew,
Kiss Me Kate, was the first musical to ever win a Tony Award in 1949.
Iit won another in 2000 for the best revival. The lead role of Kate was double cast. Former Miss
Hawai'i Cathy Foy will play the part for the first three weeks of the
show, and a former Miss Hawai'i contender, Tricia Marciel, will perform
the last two weeks.Local actor and opera singer Buzz Tennant will play the
part of Fred Graham, the male lead. Becky Maltby, who was recently seen in HPU’s
Tintypes, will play the part of Lois Lane. Maltby has done a number of
productions on the HPU stage, including A Night at Rosie’s, Rosie’s
Place, and Inherit the Wind. The rest of the Kiss Me Kate cast is made up of
HPU students and staff, including Carol Winters-Moorehead, dean of
nursing, and her daughter Claire Fallon. Ryan Lympus, assistant director of housing, will play
the part of Paul, Fred’s dresser, and performing the famous song
"Too Darn Hot." Lympus and won a Po’okela award for
best featured male in HPU’s Tintypes. Other students include Joakim Jivenius, Casandra Roame,
Michael Parsons, and Melissa McCracken. Production dates are Nov. 10 to Dec. 10. For more
