Getting acquainted: New graduates students meet
by Karen N. Mirikitani, business manager

More than 80 graduate students from different parts of the world met at Hawaii Theater Aug. 31 for the first of a two-day series of orientation events.

The morning session was conducted by Harry Byerly, director of graduate marketing, who introduced a variety of speakers, including President Chatt G. Wright and Nancy Ellis, vice president for Student Support Services.

President Wright introduced Senior Vice President Donald Gedeon, Academic Dean Dr. John Fleckles, and Professor of Management Dr. Art Whatley who later presented a short network-building exercise. Other important faculty and staff, on hand to greet the new graduate students, were Larry Zimmerman, acting dean of professional studies, Warren Wee, associate dean of business administration, and from the graduate student services office, Dee Okahara, assistant director of graduate admissions and Nicola Whistler, graduate marketing assistant.

The afternoon sessions consisted of a downtown campus tour, lunch on the mall, and an island trolley tour of Honolulu. The campus tours were conducted by Dave Allen, Roderick Mak, Dave Nazareth, Vicente Nunez, Ricardo Pereira, and Ozlem Yildirim.

On Sept. 1, graduate orientation events continued at the windward campus with a 1 p.m. keynote speech by Dr. Greg Trifonovitch. This was followed by breakout sessions with graduate faculty, a forum on graduate life, and a graduate resource expo.

The best event was saved for last—a Hawaiian luau extravaganza presented by Tihati Productions introducing the many cultures and dances of Polynesia. More than 1000 students, faculty and staff joined the luau. Many in the audience were invited to try out the dances, which produced a lot of laughter. By the end of the day, the new graduate students were enthusiastic and could hardly wait for school to start.
