HPU graduate in MVT hit
by Charlene Anne Rico

Recent HPU graduate Andrew Meader stars in Manoa Valley Theatre's hit-musical season-opener, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.

The comedy, about boy/girl relationships, runs through Oct. 8. It consists of a series of short vignettes that poke fun at everyday relationships.

MVT has been sold-out since the musical’s debut on Sept. 6 and has twice extended the run. The cast of the Joe DiPietro musical includes Greg Howell, Zenia Zambrano, and Katie Shriver. Linda Johnson directed.

Meader, who graduated this spring with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, plays Man no. 1. He is currently employed full-time at the Hawaii Theatre Center as Assistant Theatre Manager, a job he attributes to Leanne Maeda, Director of HPU's Career Services Center.

Meader said, "I like theatre management and I love entertainment. The fact that I can work in entertainment during the day and be apart of the art-making process is a great feeling for me."

Meader has no plans to become a professional actor, but he will continue to act for love of the stage. He said, "We’re doing it for the love—we’re not getting paid for this, but it doesn’t even matter. This show has been so much fun to do and the response is so good, that’s our payment—the enjoyment of the audience and the friends we are making."

The MVT show is Meader’s sixth in Hawai’i. He has been in more than 30 musicals in the past six years. He traveled with Up With People for two years before coming to HPU.

"Education at HPU was a great learning experience for me. Joyce (Maltby) really gave me a lot of freedom to do what I wanted as far as learning more about the theatre," said Meader.

About the MVT musical, Meader explained: "Husbands are dragged to it by their wives, boyfriends by their girlfriends, [and] they end up loving it!"
