Men's soccer: A shot at winning
by Yonie K. Espiritu, sports writer

Sept. 7, the HPU men’s soccer team put away a 3-0 win over Pacific Lutheran University and finished its preseason with an impressive 3-1-1 record. The Sea Warriors only allowed one goal and managed to hold their opponents to four shutouts.

"We had a good preseason, but it was just that, a preseason," said starting center midfielder Walea Kalama (10). "We have the real test coming up—our season. But one thing is for sure this year, we have one of the best shots of winning our conference."

Kalama has found himself this season with the captain’s armband and is at the top of the scoring charts for the Sea Warriors, with one assist and two goals, one unassisted.

The men’s soccer team can also look to other parts of its offensive arsenal for scoring opportunities. Darren Juliano (4) has proven himself early in the season with two goals, one in double over-time. For his last minute heroics, Juliano was awarded Pac-West player of the week.

Roar Berg (21) and Leo MacKnight (7) were able to add several goals to the scorecard during preseason play.

The success of the offense was built by a strong midfield that was directed by Kalama and Jordan Inouye (17). "Our offense is good, and it’s getting better every game!" said forward Erik Grubbs (15). "But hands down our defense is just destroying [our opponents] right now!"

HPU’s defense is currently ranked fifth in the nation and fourth in shutout percentage going into conference play. The backline is lead by senior Iovo Stefanov (12) who will be sweeping for the warriors. Stefanov was recently named Pac-West Player of the week for all his effort so far this season.

"We’re, how do you say, Rockin’, the whole team," said Stefanov.

However the fullbacks aren’t the only reason why the Sea Warriors have had so many shutouts. This year the team has two returning goalkeepers, Fredrick Andreasson (1) and Joey Czech (00). Andreasson is currently ranked 10th best keeper in the nation.

"One minute I think Freddy is better, then the next minute I think Joey is a better goalkeeper. I don’t really know, but goalie competition is tough this year," said Kalama.

During preseason, the men unfortunately racked up seven injuries, including Co-Captain Elie Sauma (31). Sauma injured a knee early in the season but was expected to be ready by the season opener. Other recovering players should also add depth all over the field.

"When the season starts, our team should be a lot better. Because of injuries, we had to do without many key players," said Stefanov.

"I feel as though there’s no superstars. We’re all bonded and stronger mentally. We understand our reason," said Kalama, "the conference championship."

The Sea Warrior men begin their quest for conference glory Sept 23 at the HPU Windward field when they face off with arch Hawaii rival Brigham Young University-Hawaii. This game will be followed by a two-week road trip to Washington.
