Pipeline-more than just a big wave
by Jenny Lundahl, arts & entertainment editor

In a dark deserted industrial area between Restaurant Row and Ward Center pounding music echoes between the buildings several blocks from the popular nightclub Pipeline.

Closer, party people are seen drifting to the entrance of a low, square-shaped factory building. The sign above the VIP entrance is the only light in the block. The regular entrance is also lit, but it’s around the corner of the building, in an alley.

The lines at both entrances are extremely long, and while club visitors should be prepared to wait at least 45 minutes before getting in, at least they’ll get a good sense of what kind of music and crowd Pipeline has.

The entrance for regular folks opens onto the dance floor where a good mixture of house music, R & B, hip-hop, and Latin music blasts from the speakers. The dance floor is huge and can be very pleasant if it isn’t too crowded.

The club has a strong local appeal reinforced by its decor. One wall of the dance floor is painted with a big mural of a wave – a real pipeline. Surfboards decorate the other walls, while TV monitors reflect the action on the dance floor.

Next to the dance floor is a lounge where visitors can sit down and relax after burning calories to wild rhythms. The two bars on each side of the lounge offer drink specials every night and a good variety of pupus at decent prices, especially during the happy hours. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, happy hours offer drinks and pupus for $2 all night long.

Stairs located between the bars and the lounge bring guests to the second floor where Pipeline offers other activities than just dancing and exploring the effects of alcohol. Games include billiards, darts, and foosball for less dance-skilled visitors. Refreshments are served from a third bar on the second floor – after all, it can be exhausting to play games!

Pipeline also offers live music certain nights of the week. Call, and a voicemail message lists their daily events.

The crowd consists mostly of local people and the ages vary from early 20s to early 30s.

For Pipeline it’s hard to be overdressed or underdressed. People wear anything from fancy suits and stylish dresses to relaxed outfits including shorts, sneakers, and aloha shirts. The only rule is, no slippers, no hats, and no tank tops (men only).

For drivers Pipeline offers valet parking for $2 but since its location is sort of inconvenient the easiest way to get there is to take a cab.

See you at Pipeline – enjoy!
