Runners start well
by Christian Friis, People & Places editor

The HPU Cross Country teams went to Lai‘e for their two first meets, and both teams were off to a good start.

Lisa Blomme won both women’s races in superior style, leading from start to finish. This is only Blommes second season in running, and these two race were her first victories.

The girls team has four new runners. In the season opener they placed fourth, and the following week they placed third, ahead of UH-Hilo. The winner was BYU-Hawai‘i, with Chaminade University one point down for second place.

Two races and two victories went to the men’s team. With several new runners on the team, it is probably the strongest one that HPU has had in the last couple of years.

In the first race, seven HPU runners were in the top ten, and in the second race six were. New runners include Shadrack Nabea, from Kenya, who transferred from Meridian College in Mississippi; Naji Abdeslam, from Morroco, and Ryan Price. Returning runners includes junior Siul Michel and seniors Ryan Drobnick, Jason Noriega, and Christian Friis.

Friis, who won both races, earned the PAC West runner of the week title.

Two late September races, the UH-Manoa and UH Hilo Invitational races will be covered next issue. Other upcoming races include the Oct. 14 Hawaii Cross Country Championships at the Windward Campus Campus (7 a.m.).
