To ride or not to ride: The public transit system, otherwise known as TheBus, is crucial to the survival of many HPU students. Students depend on the bus system for getting to school and wherever else they may need to go. The bus costs $1 a ride or $25 for a monthly pass. The question on the mind of HPU student Aimee Bussiere is, "Why are we, as college students, not eligible for the ‘student’ bus pass? It’s only $12.50" It makes sense that college students should be eligible for a discount rate. After all, many students are spending funds on tuition and the big "B" word: books. Saving $150 a year on bus passes would be much appreciated by struggling college students. However, when compared to the price of owning a car and driving to school, the bus is really a good deal. The price of a monthly parking place in a downtown garage can be up to $100 to $140 a month. Even without the price of a car, gas, insurance, and maintenance, the bus is cost-effective for any student. Honolulu City Transportation Director, Alvin Morimoto, said, "Compared to bus fares on the mainland, TheBus is a bargain. Other places may give a college pass, but the charges will be hidden in the student’s school registration fee." The $25 student’s must pay for a bus pass is well spent. It ensures students a dependable and effective public transit system at a reasonable cost. To lobby for a student rate, students should call or write Morimoto at 523-4529, 711 Kapiolani Blvd., Honolulu 96813. Back to Opinion |
