HPU musically No. 1 at Kailua Parade

by Kalamalama staff

HPU took a number of awards at this year’s Kailua 4th of July parade – called the best ever by parade organizers. The University won First Place honors in two categories: Best Live Music Unit and Best School Band. HPU also won Third Place for Best Overall.

More than 100 units participated in this popular 55th annual parade which was begun by the American Legion to honor retiring World War II veterans.

Some of the many new entries this year included the Honolulu Mounted police unit, the U.S.S. Missouri battleship, the Baton Twirlers of the United States, Free Vietnam Veterans, Pinky’s Bar and Grill, PFLAG Oahu, Families Improving Education, Sunshine School, Windward Y Moms, Daughters of the Nile, Hawai‘i Equestrian and Trail Association, Swingin’ Tradewinds Jass Band, Foodland Super Market, Windward Episcopalians, Oahu Community Recycling, and BookEnds.

Compared to last year, 20 more units participated in this year’s parade, and spectators agreed that the caliber, variety and enthusiasm of this year’s participants were unparalleled. Festivities continued after the parade with most Kailuans venturing to the beach for the afternoon and then returning at dusk to watch the Airshow which featured two windward residents: Hank Bruckner and Clint Churchill. The day was topped off with an exciting fireworks display produced by Hawai‘i Explosives and Pyrotechnics.

Sponsors for this year’s event were Ameron, Foodland, Hardware Hawai‘i, Kaneohe Ranch, McKenna Windward Motorcars, and Papa John’s Pizza.
