HPU Comedy Club in production
by Justin Murphy, staff writer

“Get your free pizza over here,” exclaimed Paul Fitzgerald, a member of the new Comedy Club at HPU as he tried to lure students to the club’s booth at the Fort Street Mall Club Carnival Sept. 14. The new club is causing quite a stir at HPU, and many are wondering who is behind the operation.

Comedy Club President Charles Ward has been a bright face around the campus for the past year, involving himself in Student Life activities as well as running for HPU student body president. He started the club with several other students last March to bring some enthusiasm and pizzazz to the school.

The Comedy Club at HPU has been working on creating a show for ‘Olelo, a local public access channel. Laugh Out Loud is their sketch comedy program with similarities to Saturday Night Live and In Living Color. The show combines local humor and premeditated silliness along with a dash of reality in its news segment.

The members have worked over the summer to develop and videotape skits and plan to begin airing the weekly show later this month on channel 52. (Local cable programming; air time has yet to be determined.)

The club currently has 12 members and is looking for new talent. Membership is free and nothing is required to join. A sense of humor helps, but it isn’t mandatory. So far, only two of 15 shows planned have been taped, so anyone who has comedic ideas or who would like to act in the skits should call Charles Ward at 941-5334 or Justin Murphy at 254-3375.
