SIFE 'Giant Killers' return to nationals
by Karen N. Mirikitani, business manager emerita

HPU’s SIFE team could hardly contain their excitement on learning they had won the April 12 Hawai‘i Regional competition at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort.

“We’re headed to the Nationals in Kansas City! I can’t wait to see how far we’ll go this time,” said Saw Ghee Hong (Malaysia), member of the regional-winning SIFE team.

“We learned a lot from last year’s competition, and this year we want to go further,” said Benedikt Goetz (Italy), SIFE president.

“This team is very diverse, and the projects we worked on shows this mixture clearly,” said Ken Schoolland, associate professor of economics and faculty advisor to SIFE. “We wanted to really go global and stand up firmly for entrepreneurship,” added co-advisor Dr. Susan Fox-Wolfgramm, associate professor in management.

This year’s nine-member team included Saw and Goetz, Julia Filatova (Russia), Ying Li (Hong Kong), Nga Nguyen (Hawai‘i), Katja Silverå (Sweden), Laura Windell (Ohio). James Yang (Taiwan) was responsible for the multimedia.

SIFE at HPU competed against the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, University of Hawai‘i at West O‘ahu, and Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i. Each presentation lasted 24 minutes and reviewed the projects the groups had accomplished throughout the year.
