Express your artistic side and earn credits toward your degree
at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, which offers a wide range of
14-week art classes, each of which earns stduents two academic
credits from HPU.
HPU students are encouraged to take advantage of this
unique opportunity, said advisor Ann Yamashiro, who is
concerned that few students know about the classes.
The Honolulu Academy of Arts offers studio art classes from
Sept. 10 through Dec. 14. Classes are organized for beginning,
intermediate, and advanced students in drawing, painting, ceramics,
jewelry, printmaking, basketry, weaving, calligraphy, book designing,
and cinema studies.

HPU students can receive college credit for Academy of Art
classes. Students should see their advisors before classes
start Sept. 10. All classes are held at the Linekona Art
Center across from the Academy exhibition hall.

Unique classes in drawing and painting include figure drawing,
Chinese brush painting, and modern intuitive painting. For hands-on
creative work, students can try figurative sculpting. Also popular
are the beading and jewelry with an attitude classes.
Tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2002 are morning classes
from 9 a.m. to noon and evening classes from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30
p.m. Schedules are available at the Honolulu Academy of Arts
or at HPUs advising center, where students can register
to take art classes for credit starting Aug. 12. Call 544-0239.
Studio art courses are held at the Academys Linekona
Art Center located at 1111 Victoria Street, across the street
from the exhibition center.
Parking is available in the lot behind the Linekona building
and costs $1 with validation. Lot hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.,
Monday through Saturday and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The gallery at the Academy Art Center hosts yearlong art exhibitions
featuring local artists.
xhibitions at the Art Center are free of charge and open for
public viewing Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. and on Sunday from 1 until 5 p.m. The gallery is closed
on Mondays and major holidays.
