Metered public parking offers four-hour parking limits. These
stalls tend to fill up fast during the midday hours, so it
is wise to park early. Meters in downtown Honolulu charge
25 cents for each fifteen minute time period. Meters are a
good option for students attending one class or having only
to stay on campus for a short period of time.
Parking fees in downtown Honolulu ranked third highest in
a June survey of parking garage costs in 50 major North American
cities. Unlucky Honolulu drivers, on the average, pay a regular
daily rate of over $30 and a monthly rate of $155. A report
by commercial real estate firm, Colliers International, ranked
Honolulu the 19th priciest for unreserved monthly parking.
Private parking garages offer hourly, early bird, and monthly
parking rates. Some garages offer special rates to HPU students
(see the list, at right). Though expensive, most garages have
security guards, which offer protection to your vehicle. Some
garages are covered while others are open. Call individual
facilities for additional information.
HPU students can park at the Hawaii Loa campus and
catch the 15-minute HPU shuttle to downtown. Parking for the
entire fall 2002 semester is $130, and daily parking is a
$3 flat rate.
