Two festival will preview cultural diversity at HPU

by Melissa McCracken, assoc. editor A&E

Many HPU clubs are already organizing for two fall celebrations of all the colorful cultures on campus. The second annual Intercultural Day Preview on Fort Street Mall will be Nov. 1, and the state-organized, two-day Cultural Arts District Festival Oct. 11 and 12.

HPU is a sponsor and supporter of the Cultural Arts District Festival. Cultural performances and food and craft booths will be underwritten by the city, which will provide a stage, sound system, and booths.

Clubs and individuals interested in participating should call the Student Life Office at 544-0277. The HPU Preview Day, a precursor to the highly popular Intercultural Day, is sponsored by the International Student Services office and the Council of Countries.

The event will feature performances by the winners from the last two years’ Intercultural Day dance teams, Japan and Korea. Cultural exhibits by HPU’s international clubs will also line the Mall.

Intercultural Day, held in the spring, is traditionally an all-day event that includes dance performances and exhibit tables that display everything from international foods and clothes to cultural music and tools by many countries. Performing countries compete for prize money that is awarded to the winning clubs.

The preview day is designed to encourage HPU students, from 107 countries, to participate in Intercultural Day. “This time allows us to share with HPU and the downtown population, the diversity of students at HPU,” said Ann Newton, Director of International Student Services (ISS).

Clubs interested in exhibiting a table at the Preview Day can sign up at the ISS Office in FHT 502. The ISS office is also looking for individuals to orchestrate the main event that will be held in the spring. For information call 544-0230.
