Aloha spirit at CELP/EFP picnic

On Saturday Oct. 12, the Center of English Learning Program
(CELP, formerly EFP) had its annual picnic for students and
faculty at the Hawai‘i Loa campus.
“We always have a theme for the picnic,” said Mary Landolt,
CELP advisor and organizer of the event. Aloha was the theme
for this year’s event, but last year it was Latin. “Aloha is
always a popular theme, but this year is the first time we had
HPU’s own hula halau perform.”

Yellow school buses brought students from Waikiki and downtown
Honolulu to the picnic, which started at 10 a.m. After registration,
all the students gathered on the lanai of the Academic Center,
where they were taught cultural traditions such as hula and
Hawaiian songs.

“Your hands are very important,” said Barbara
Hannum, who taught the hula, “because they tell a story.” Most
participants swung their hips and gracefully moved their hands
to the traditional Hukilau, only a few students chose to be
spectators.

Everybody participated in the next activity:
singing Hawaiian songs. “‘Aloha O‘e’ is a song that you can
sing when you are leaving somebody,” explained Susan Duprey,
HPU’s choral
