Halloween Hoopla

by Baxter Cepeda, Sports editor

With images of a scary pumpkin and a green witch drawn on the backboards, the Sea Warrior hoops team capped a night of basketball and halloween fun with an intrasquad scrimmage in the first HPU Halloween Hoopla at the James C. Castle gymnasium Halloween eve.

After being introduced, the players split up into green and white teams and played 20 minutes of running scrimmage. The green team--comprised of Mike Baron, Jay Bussey, Leandro Maruoka, Fabrizio Mendiola, Albert Tecul, and Nic Walters--took the 79-74 victory.

Prior to the intrasquad scrimmage, a faculty team that included women's volleyball coach Tita Ahuna and Rev. Dale Burke lost to the Intramural champions 15-12. Some of the faculty were still reeling from an earlier 17-4 loss to the Associated Students of HPU All-Stars.

Athletes from every sport were on hand to represent their team in the athletes' costume contest, won by the "Laundry Basket," freshman Keli Ching of the soccer team. "It just came to me one day," said Ching. Brandon Lee, Spirit Club coordinator, dressed as a Hawaiian Hula dancer won the student contest.

Sophomore Brent Erickson of the baseball team won the free throw contest, making 15 in 30 seconds, while teammate Sean Paiua Jr. won the three-point contest. Four students were given t-shirts for competing in a dance contest. Prizes were donated by ASHPU and teams.

The evening, organized by Liz Tiglao and Heather Hubbard of Student Life, started outdoors with 15 trick-or-treat booths, games, food, music and more. The HPU cheerleaders won the best booth contest. "It's a new tradition," said Lee.
