HPU wins preseason opener

The HPU men's basketball team opened the 2002-2003 season with a pair of blow-out exhibition wins.

In the first game, the Sea Warriors beat the Northwest All-Stars 104-64 at Mid-Pacific Institute's Mills Gym Nov. 14.

Six Sea Warriors scored double digit points. Junior guards Marvin Noble and Aaron Abrams, along with senior forward Rashad Davis, led the Sea Warriors with a combined 53 points and 25 rebounds. Noble, who was the game high scorer with 19 points, also had six rebounds and four assists. Davis, who netted 17 points, had a match-high 13 rebounds. Abrams had 17 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Fabrizio Mendiola had 11 points, while Nic Walters chipped in 10 points.

In the second game, HPU defeated Shanghai Jiao Tong University 118-48 at the Neal Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu Nov. 18, this time getting double figure scoring from seven players.

Junior guard Marvin Noble led all scorers with 24 points, going 4-for-4 from the 3-point line. The first year Sea Warrior also had five assists, three steals, and two rebounds. Senior center Leandro Maruoka added 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

The Sea Warriors begin their regular season Nov. 25. Their first Pac West game is against BYU-H on Jan.10.
