The IABC has set the date for the fourth annual Communications
Career Day to be held at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort on
April 12.
The HPU chapter of the International Association of Business
Communicators and Akamai Advertising, the HPU chapter of the
American Advertising Federation, sponsor the annual event in
conjunction with the College of Communication, as a valuable
source of information for all HPU students about careers in
communication-related fields.

“It is a half-day series of workshops and seminars designed
to provide information and guidance to people entering communication
careers,” said Dr. Helen Varner, dean of communication. Past
workshops have addressed topics such as corporate culture, communication
technology, portfolio development, resume writing, television
broadcasting, Internet and Website design, corporate communication,
business, etiquette and more.
“Students are attracted to these workshops due to the strong
reputations of the guest speakers,” Varner added. Over the past
four years, leading professionals in various fields of communication
in Hawai‘i have conducted the workshops including Stafford Kiguchi,
senior vice president and manager of corporate communication
for Bank of Hawai‘i; B.J. Whitman, director of public relations
at the Sheraton Waikiki and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel; John Fink,
vice president and general manager of KHNL and KFBE television
stations; and Sheri Rolf, general manager of Hawaii.com.
After the workshops, students attend lunch with a panel of
communication professionals, HPU faculty, and HPU alumni. Students
get to hear stories of what these individuals did while they
were at HPU, how they got their jobs, and what they would do
differently today in order to be successful. “These are successful
HPU graduates and they give valuble advice to students attending
the workshops,” said Varner.
The registration cost for the entire day’s event has been
tentatively planned at $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
