Basketball a good story

by Kalamalama Staff

The invention and the inventor of basketball is the subject of a musical production that debuted recently at Xavier University in Connecticut.

John Grissmer’s The Perfect Game tells the story of James “Doc” Naismith, who invented basketball in 1891 as a way to occupy unruly students at a YMCA school in Springfield, Mass.

The musical has a bemused Naismith moving back and forth in time between 1891 and today and “is upbeat and lively," according to director Catherine Springfield.

Alexander Wolff, in Big Game, Small World, says basketball has become more popular than soccer among middle-class youngsters around the world.
