Chorale presents concert

by Kalamalama staff

Spring is in the air—or at least the sounds of it—as the HPU International Chorale and Vocal Ensemble presented its first-ever Spring Choral Concert 4 p.m. April 27 at Kawaiaha‘o Church, 957 Punchbowl St.

The event, free and open to the public, featured songs of love, nature, and peace from Brazil, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Cuba, Hawai‘i, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan, South Africa, and the United States. HPU English instructor Patrice Wilson recited poems from her personal collection during the performance. The program was directed by Susan M. Duprey, director of HPU Choral Activities, and accompanied by Herb Mahelona.

The HPU choral program is Hawai‘i’s first program specializing in ethnic choral literature. Through vocal performances, both groups reach out to the community and showcase the talents of HPU’s diverse student body. The International Chorale is made up of HPU students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members; and the Vocal Ensemble is made up of select HPU students.
