Why not other sports?

by Derek Clarkston, Sports editor

Golf? Why not women’s basketball? Men’s Volleyball? Water polo?

“Women’s basketball is always a sport brought up by the mainland schools,” said Russell Dung, HPU’s athletic director. “The only problem was that the Hawai‘i schools don’t have any, and the women’s basketball season would be the same time as the men’s season.”

Dung added that if HPU had a home gymnasium, it would not be a problem to sponsor a women’s basketball team.

Water polo, swimming, and men’s volleyball were also eliminated because lack of facilities and so few Division II schools have those sports. This would force HPU to schedule games for Division II athletes against schools with Division I teams, something that HPU’s Athletic Department feels would be unfair.
