HPU newspaper wins national award

For the seventh straight year, Kalamalama, the HPU newspaper, received a top national award and a national First Place with Special Merit Award that placed it among the top- seven college newspapers in the nation, overall.


Frear Center allows innovative classroom teaching

When the students in a computer science and information systems course did a case study on a successful small-time Kansas farmer, they were able to hear first-hand from the farmer himself how he used technology to stay ahead of his competitors. This was made possible through Internet technologies in the classroom.


Young journalists win scholarships

Dr. Helen Varner, dean of HPU’s College of Communication, awarded three scholarships to local high school journalists Sarah Covell, Brian Fields, and Isabel Batenhorst at the Hawai‘i Publishers Association High School Journalism Awards Banquet May 7 at the Pagoda Hotel.


Sheridan Teacher of the Year

An HPU professor of social work, Dr. Mary Sheridan, has been awarded the University’s 2003 Trustees Award for Teaching Excellence. The announcement was made at HPUs spring commencement ceremony, May 14 at the Waikiki Shell.


Nursing program gets grant

The HPU School of Nursing was recently awarded a $34,000 Advance Practice Nursing Traineeship Grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Service Administration.


Allison named AAN fellow

The American Academy of Nursing has nominated Dr. Dale Allison, HPU professor of nursing, to become a fellow of the national organization. She will be inducted as a new fellow at the Academy’s 30th annual meeting, Nov. 15 in San Diego, Calif.


Student named NSNA

HPU nursing student Michael Brakel was recently elected secretary/treasurer of the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA).


HPU graduates nearly 1,000 in spring, summer

More than 600 students in the spring and nearly 400 students in the summer graduated from HPU in its 54th and 55th commencement ceremonies at the Waikiki Shell, according to administrative support staffer Ruby Okano.


Dream Encyclopedia opens

The HPU art gallery opened its fall season Aug. 4 with The Dream Encyclopedia, a joint exhibition of new works in clay and on paper by Rochelle Lum, Jo Rowley and Maile Yawata.


HPU partners with Oceanic Institute

On June 6, the HPU Board of Trustees unanimously approved a contract of affiliation and cooperation between HPU and The Oceanic Institute in windward O‘ahu. Earlier, on May 12, the Institute’s governing board had approved the contract.
