Young journalists win scholarships

Dr. Helen Varner, dean of HPU’s College of Communication,
awarded three scholarships to local high school journalists
Sarah Covell, Brian Fields, and Isabel Batenhorst at the Hawai‘i
Publishers Association High School Journalism Awards Banquet
May 7 at the Pagoda Hotel.
The scholarships are renewable 75% tuition waivers, Varner explained,
so the total value of each of them was more than $25,000 for
each student. |

The first award presented went to Sarah Covell, a senior at
Admiral Arthur W. Radford High School, where her advisor is
Mary A. Bautista. Sarah is an honor student who won District
Outstanding Performance Awards for both Feature Story Writing
and Newswriting for the RamPage. She also produces video stories
for the morning bulletin on RamTV. She participates in weekday
cheerleading practices and is co-captain of a nationally ranked
team. In her spare time, she volunteers for community service
projects as a member of the Interact Club and puts in five
hours a week as an intern in the Radford Learning Center. She
plans to study broadcast journalism at HPU.

| Brian Fields a senior at Kalaheo High School, won
First Place at the 1999-2000 Kalaheo Quiz Bowl. In addition to
an outstanding scholastic record, he has held numerous leadership
roles in the Boy Scouts of America and the Kalaheo National Junior
ROTC. He won the Military Order of the World Wars Award for Youth
Leadership. He is the Kalaheo Webmaster and has been an officer
in the Kalaheo Class Council, the Cross Country Team, and St.
Anthony’s Parish Youth Group. He will study visual communication
at HPU. |

| Isabel Batenhorst is also from Radford High, where
she worked on both the RamPage and RamTV. She has researched
sharks at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology and served
as freshman class president. She is also an athlete and played
basketball and soccer. She is a member of the Interact Club and
the National Honor Society, and she has worked at the Hickam
skate park, the Thrift Shop, and the Commissary. Isabel plans
to study broadcast journalism at HPU. |
