Student named NSNA

by Kalamalama staff

HPU nursing student Michael Brakel was recently elected secretary/treasurer of the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). He joins eight students from universities across the country elected to represent nursing students at the national level. Brakel is also part of the most diverse group in the organization’s history—with three men and five individuals from underrepresented populations serving on the Board of Directors.

A senior at HPU and an active duty airman in the U.S. Air Force, Brakel currently serves as treasurer for the Hawai‘i Student Nurses Association and secretary of the Tri-Beta Honor Society at HPU—all while maintaining a 3.95 grade point average. He is the recipient of numerous scholarships, including the Marley Irons Memorial Scholarship, and is a member of three honor societies and organizations including the National Black Nurses Association.

“It is a great honor to have a representative from Hawai‘i and Hawai‘i Pacific University in this capacity,” said Brakel. “The goal was to make people aware nationally that Hawai‘i is a state with an active nursing organization with many resources to offer.”
