Aloha from President

with Chatt G. Wright
|
|
I am pleased to welcome you to the start of a new academic
year at Hawai‘i Pacific University. Whether you are
a new or returning student, whether you are from Hawai‘i
or from beyond our islands, we greet you with a welcoming
spirit of aloha as you enter the university for a new year.
|
| |
| We are a diverse university--our students
come from more than 100 nations around the world; our Office
of Student Life has prepared an varied schedule of co-curricular
activities that will enhance your education; and our faculty
are not only excellent but have a professional commitment to
education second to none. |
| |
| That commitment was honored recently
when the HPU faculty recognized five of their own by bestowing
Golden Apple Awards honoring outstanding faculty for their contributions
to HPU as teachers and scholars. |
| |
| Ken Schoolland, associate professor
of economics, received the Golden Apple Award for Distinguished
Teaching for using a variety of interacting teaching tools, including
debates and Socratic methodology to raise fundamental questions
about ethical issues and current events. A Sam Walton Fellow,
Schoolland is the coach for Students in Free Enterprise, a team
that twice won national championships. Among his numerous publication
is the satirical book, The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible: A
Free Market Odyssey, which is currently published in 27 languages. |
| |
| Dr. Russell Hart, associate professor
of history, received the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in
Scholarship. To date, Dr. Hart has produced five coauthored books,
countless articles, and a national-award-winning monograph, Clash
of Arms: How the Allies Won in Normandy. Dr. Hart is also active
in furthering scholarship in his field through participation
in major conferences and as an editor of a series of books on
warfare in the 20th century. |
| |
| Melvin Masuda, associate professor
of law, received the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Mentoring,
an award that honors the recipient’s development and support
of teachers in the early stages of their academic careers. Masuda
has been instrumental in mentoring new adjunct faculty at HPU
by providing guidance on how to construct a syllabus and develop
class policies, what teaching methods work, and how to stimulate
interest in a course. |
| |
| Dr. Mark Lane, assistant professor
of finance, received the Golden Apple Award for Reflective Use
of Technology to foster interactive learning and teaching techniques.
Dr. Lane has been on the leading edge of using technology for
learning for over a decade. He was one of the original pioneers
providing distance education at HPU and has spent thousands of
hours building custom Web materials for finance students. His
latest projects include a complete Web learning environment called
Business Finance On-line. |
| |
| Jeanine Tweedie, assistant professor
of nursing, received the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in
Service Learning, an award that recognizes those who are involved
in planning and implementing service learning projects. Tweedie
helps students receive hands-on experience through service learning
opportunities. Her students participate in varied activities
from the Senior Olympics and senior health fairs to student health
teaching on O‘ahu to providing community service on Molokai. |
| |
| As we begin the new academic year,
I encourage you to take advantage not only of the excellence
of our faculty but also of all that HPU has to offer to support
your learning, from the academic advisors and the librarians
and the tutoring center to the encounters, discussions, and friendships
you will form with your fellow students. All of these will broaden
your perspectives on the issues of the day and the world we all
share and may help you form friendships here that will not only
span the globe but last a lifetime. |
