China delegates participate in environmental seminar

Fourteen delegates from the Bureau of Land Resource of Chengdu City, China, took part in a one-day, educational seminar at Hawai‘i Pacific University recently to learn about strategies and techniques they can use to address land use development and resource conservation in their area.

“The group’s intentions were to study the land use and development pattern in Hawai‘i, using Waikiki as a case study,” explained Wendy Lam, director of the HPU Travel Industry Management program. “At HPU, we were able to provide them a quality educational program that is customized to meet their needs.”

The delegates attended a class session taught by Dr. Joseph Patoskie, associate professor of travel industry management, followed by a walking tour in Waikiki.

“I discussed the land development issues of Waikiki from a historical perspective, illustrated both the positive and negative aspects of the resort’s present build-out, and implications for much-needed future redevelopment to compliment the current improvements that have already been initiative,” said Dr. Patoskie.

This is the third group of executives from China utilizing HPU’s educational resources, as part of a partnership between the University, the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, and the China Hotel and Restaurant Association.
