Kalikikane, though, will have to wait till the 2004-2005 school
year to officially compete at the NCAA II level, since this
year’s Sea Warrior’s golf team will be considered
a competitive club.
“
Our golf programs are starting out as a club sport this year
with the intention of going to intercollegiate status next
year,” said Russell Dung, HPU’s athletic director. “We
thought that if we start the program early, we can at least
get the coach on board and the foundation set up to make the
transition a little bit easier.
“
The main thing right now is getting my team together,” said
Kalikikane. “Personally, I’m glad we are not competing
this year, so it gives us time to gel together as a team.”
Dung, who is in his second year as the school’s Athletic
Director, is looking forward to seeing what Kalikikane can
do with this program. “Who knows, the golf program may
build into something really big,” Dung said. |
