Dive Club cleans up

Special to Kalamalama by Sara Yeo

Members of the HPU Dive Club were on the reefs off Portlock Sept. 20 lending a bunch of hands to help with the state’s annual Beach Cleanup project. Their objective: remove all the tackle left by fisherman over the past year at this popular fishing site.

Twelve members of the club participated, including club advisor Dr. Keith Korsmeyer. Two dives were conducted from the Noni Z, which left Koko Marina in Hawai‘i Kai at 11:30 that morning. Each dive was about an hour long, and the hardest part of the job, according to club members, was removing the more than eight pounds of fishing line that had wrapped around coral heads.

Club members also retrieved 57 pounds of lead fishing weights which they will melt and recycle into dive belt weights for use of the club’s members.
