When asked what motivated Kurosawa to write The Ride, he said he wanted to make a film that showed the real love and origin of surfing. His goal was to show what it really takes to be a true surfer; by using Duke as role model he helped achieve his goal in the film. Many surf movies these days just show the glitz and the glamour of surfing. People hardly ever get to see the way it all began.
