HPU students took two of the three top honors in this year’s
Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication
(AEJMC) national logo contest. Thanita Pakjamsai and Desiree
Higa, graduate students in the College of Communication, won
first and third place, respectively, for their logo designs
for the 2004 AEJMC convention in Toronto, Canada.
“These awards will bring international recognition to
our program,” said Dr. Helen Varner, dean of the College
of Communication. “The design will be on every publication,
and all of the conference materials that are sent to college
and university professors in advertising, journalism, public
relations, speech, and related disciplines by AEJMC this year.” |

graduate, will receive $200 for the winning entry. Her design
will be used on all AEJMC 2004 publications and on materials
related to the organization’s upcoming Toronto conference.
About 2,000 AEJMC members from all over the world are expected
to attend.

Higa, originally from Makaha,
O‘ahu, will receive $50 for her third-place entry.
In addition to being an HPU graduate student, Higa is a special
events coordinator for Special Olympics Hawai‘i.
Judging of the competition was done in Japan this year and
included design teams at Katsui Design, Takashi Akiyama
Studio, Outside
Directors, Cue’s Global, and A&A Masuteru Aoba Design.
Creating contest entries was a project in Com 6440 Design
and Layout, a course taught by Dr. Brian Cannon, assistant
professor
of communication. Cannon explained that, “The students
needed to research what landmarks or characteristics would capture
some flavor of the city the conference will be held in and convey
that in their design. Part of the challenge is including the
name of the agency and the date of the conference.”
