Baketball improves record over break

by Chris Alcantara, Associate sports editor

After a disappointing 0-7 start for the HPU men’s basketball team, the tables seem to be turning as the Sea Warriors now stand at 5-9 with a 2-1 record in the PacWest Conference.

HPU picked up its first win of the season Dec. 16 in an 83-65 win over Notre Dame de Namur University at Mid-Pacific Institute. Senior guard Aaron Abrams led all scorers with 29 points for HPU and registered an impressive double-double performance with 13 rebounds. Sophomore Audrius Peciukas, a newcomer to HPU from Lithuania, was also a factor with a double-double of his own (17 points, 16 rebounds) to go along with six blocks.

Next up for the Sea Warriors was heartbreaking 76-73 loss to Alaska-Anchorage University at McCabe Gym at Chaminade University Dec. 18. With the game tied at 73 apiece, Alaska-Anchorage’s Peter Bullock got hold of a loose ball and was able to get a layup and the foul with 1.5 seconds left for the win. Abrams and senior guard Marvin Noble led HPU with 20 points each while junior guard Dante Sykes added 14 points and six rebounds.

HPU chalked up its second victory of the season with a decisive 81-68 win over Doane College at Mid-Pac Dec. 28. Noble who led all scorers, was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line on his way to 23 points. Senior guard Albert Tecul poured in 15 points and Peciukas pulled in a team-high 10 rebounds in the win.

The Sea Warriors came away with a close 71-70 victory over Southwestern College Dec. 30 at Mid-Pac on a game-winning jumper by Abrams with three seconds on the clock. Abrams ended the game with 11 points, but it was Tecul who led HPU with a game-high 17 points including 3-for-3 from three-point-range.
