Chaplain's Corner
with Reverend Dale Burke

Have you ever wanted to just give up?

So far this semester, how are you handling all your responsibilities? It’s a challenge balancing schedules, finding time for homework, meeting financial obligations, maintaining relationships, and more. When so many things build up and come due, it’s easy to find ourselves overwhelmed and under-energized.

It might help to remember one of the great stories of the Old Testament. David, a young Israelite, was selected by his people to do battle with a giant Philistine warrior, Goliath. It was the mismatch of all time! In seeing the giant coming at him, David could have easily run the other way. Instead, he looked the monster right in the eye, used the tools he had available (a slingshot), and hurled a stone that brought down the mighty hulk. From this experience of facing an obstacle with courage, David went on to become the greatest king of all Israel. He didn’t give up. He knew God was with him!

Like David, when we face the obstacles before us, we are at our best when we look the “giants” right in the eye and use the strength God gives every day to those who trust him. When you are next over-whelmed, take a moment, invite God to be with you. I believe you will find strength to persevere.
