Club Carnival enlivens Fort St. Mall

by Joy Kikuchi, S & E editor

The HPU spring Club Carnival transformed Fort Street mall into a day-long festival of talk and laughter on Jan. 30. The carnival began at 10 a.m. and featured booths from 56 HPU clubs and organizations as well as a few community organizations. The different groups set up their booths early in the day, with some students even up with the sun and braving the rain to stand in line at the Student Life office to get choice spots on the Mall.

Some of the livelier booths were the Hawaii College Democrats (they were loud) and the Environmental Club (they were crowded). Many of the booths had colorful displays of photographs from past activities, giving potential members a glimpse into what the group had to offer. Games were played at the stage, and a pep rally began at 12:45 p.m., featuring performances by HPU’s dance group, band and cheerleaders.

The sounds of Hawaiian music filled the mall beginning at 1 p.m. with performances by Herb Ohta, Jr. and Keoki Kahumoku. Each is a talented musician in his own right. Ohta is best known for playing the ‘ukulele, and Kahumoku is an accomplished slack-key guitarist. Together, they are best known for their albums “Hawaiian from the Heart” and “Treasures of Aloha.” Ohta and Kahumoku have played at HPU numerous times at Music on the Mall events.

If you missed your chance to sign up for an HPU club, you can still call Student Life at 544-0277 or visit the office at 1188 Fort Street Mall, one door makai of Flower Fair. Here’s a list of the organizations that participated.
