We had no previous knowledge about the Kalihi
area, so we were shocked by the conditions at the schools and
the abundant evidence of economic hardship. Resources, including
school materials and books, were scarce. For most of the students
these dictionaries would be the only book their whole family
would own. The Rotaract Club chose to give dictionaries, as
opposed to other resources, due to the practicality, usefulness,
and value of the book as an educational tool.
Hopefully the dictionaries will inspire these children to lose
themselves in the world of words and knowledge rather than getting
caught up in the patterns of poverty typical of their everyday
lives. We in Rotoract, as most of us at HPU, believe that education
is truly the key to success, and for many of these children it
may be the only way out of poverty towards a new life with endless
possibilities.
If you are interested interested in making a difference in
the community, you are invited to join the Rotaract Club.Upcoming
events include movie nights with the children of the Kamehameha
4 Housing, tutoring student at Farrington High School, and a
visit to the Shriner’s Children’s hospital.
Rotaract
Rotaract is an international program for young men and women
ages 18-30 who believe they can make a difference in the community
and world in which they live and are dedicated to doing so.
Rotaract clubs provide an opportunity for young adults to
enhance the
knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development,
to address the physical and social needs of their communities,
and to promote better relations between all people worldwide
through a framework of friendship and service. Rotaract clubs
are part of a global effort to bring peace and international
understanding to the world.For more info e-mail hpu_rotaract@hpu.edu |
