Outdoor Lifestyles

by Rody Rodriguez, staff writer

When I was just 18 years of age, a friend of mine invited me to accompany him hiking. Young and full of vigor, I decided to join him on what I thought would be a little walk in the woods. Little did I know at the time that we were about to hike the highest mountain in the Continental United States.

We climbed California’s Mt. Whitney (14,495 feet) on a crisp cool October day in a little more than 10 hours. Ever since that triumphant moment, I’ve been in love with the outdoors.

The numerous treks under my belt include hiking Grand Canyon National Park, Joshua Tree NP, Zion NP, and Bryce Canyon NP. This semester I, along with my colleague Joseph Bybee, have worked with Kalamalama to bring you some of the exciting outdoor adventures on and around O‘ahu. The new section will inform readers about local hikes, aquatic sports such as scuba diving, how-tos, equipment and shop reviews, and anything related to outdoor activities. Send your suggestions, if there’s something you like top see covered, or your articles if you’ve done something interesting.

E-mail feedback and ideas to kalamalama@hpu.edu or strngboy@hotmail.com.
