The April 16 Intercultural Day marked the 20th
anniversary of HPU’s celebration of its cultural diversity.
Twenty years ago Assistant Professor of psychology Howard
Mark-owitz, then advisor to the International Student Organization
(ISO), helped create an event to allow students to share
their cultures. The now biannual Intercultural Day has grown
into a spectacular pageant of cultural awareness that culminates
one of the five themes taught here at HPU.
The United Samoan Organization at HPU took
home the Club of the Year Award—the big prize at the
annual Student Life Club Award Banquet held April 8 at the
Raddison Prince Kuhio hotel in Waikiki. Also winning big
was the Swedish Student Association, which won its first-ever
club award for “Most Spirited Club.”
June 13 will be the day HPU’s International
Vocal Ensemble debuts on an international stage when it performs
with five other U.S. choral groups at New York’s Carnegie
Hall. Susan Duprey, director of the ensemble said, “the
performance will not be a competition, but an appreciation
of the art of music.”
