Club Awards - USO tops again; SSA first win: 'most spirited'

by Loren Moreno, Student Life editor

The United Samoan Organization at HPU took home the Club of the Year Award—the big prize at the annual Student Life Club Award Banquet held April 8 at the Raddison Prince Kuhio hotel in Waikiki. Also winning big was the Swedish Student Association, which won its first-ever club award for “Most Spirited Club.”

USO worked diligently throughout the year participating in every “TGIF”—the weekly Friday campus event for HPU students. USO also co-sponsored an event with the Associated Students of Hawai‘i Pacific University, and it represented HPU throughout Hawai‘i doing performances at concerts and also appearing at various HPU Office of Admission events.

Speaking over shouts from the USO delegation at the banquet, Director of Student Life Heather Hubbard was not even able to finish her announcement of the award: “Heck, it’s obvious,” she admitted. “Club of the Year deservingly goes to United Samoan Organization.” She later commented that HPU is honored to have this dedicated club to represent it.

The Swedish Student Association took home the first award of the evening—Most Spirited Club. This was the first-ever award for one of the University’s largest student organizations. “When planning their events, they go through all the proper channels,” said Hubbard. “They do a great job of working with their advisors and the University. Their events have boosted the reputation of HPU with outside vendors. They are an awesome group.”

SSA is known for its annual Swedish Christmas Party. The organization uses the event to share traditional Swedish recipes and cultural traditions as well as their feast of Lucia—the anticipation of the arrival of the Queen of Light—with the rest of the HPU community.

The Environmental Club won Rookie Club of the Year. Most Philanthropic Club went to Circle K. The German Student Association and the Creative Writing Club tied for Event of the Year with the sponsorship of the Ultimate Soccer Challenge and the Nightwrite events respectively.
