Kalamalama's annual nightclub roundup

Wacky lights, loud bass-thumping music, and people
dancing, can be found at the hottest nightclubs right in the
downtown area and Waikiki. Most clubs are 21 and over, but there
are a few nights available for younger crowds (18-20). Here are
some of the top hottest places:

Pipeline Café

Pipeline Café in Kaka‘ako, is well known for its many live concerts.
This two-floor club welcomes the 18-and-over crowd on Friday nights, also known
as “Foreplay Fridaze.” Downstairs is a huge dance floor with a bar,
and separate lounge section with a smaller dance floor. Upstairs are darts, pool
tables, another bar, and VIP/karaoke room. Cover charge on 18 and nights is $15,
$5 for those 21 and up. The club opens at 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and
at 10 p.m. on Fridays until 4 a.m. |

Zanzabar

Zanzabar, located in the Waikiki Trade Center, has an extensive
collection of Egyptian art, booths, a VIP Room, and a dance floor
that is nearly always packed. Locals and tourists enjoy shakin’ their
booties to the thumping rhythms of modern Hip-Hop and R&B.
The room holds 800 people or more, and the dance floor itself
fits more than 100. It’s open from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday
through Sunday to 21 and over. The 18-and-over crowd is welcome
on Sunday and Monday nights. The cover charge is $10. |

Blue Tropix Restaurant and Nightclub

Blue Tropix, located across from the Convention Center, is
a restaurant with a medium-sized dance floor. It’s widely
known for the live monkeys kept behind the bar. These infamous “pets” don’t
serve drinks, but stay in a soundproof glass tank behind the
bar, shielded from the loud music and secondhand smoke. There
is also a bar upstairs for 21-and-over crowds. The 18-and-over
crowd is welcomed Mondays through Saturdays. Expect to wait
in line. Cover charge is $10 for 18 and over and $5 for 21
and up.

Volcanoes

Volcanoes is located behind the Nimitz Center in Kalihi. It has
a sports bar, a huge dance floor, pool tables, dart boards, and
video games. This is one of the few hangouts that have a night
for all ages. Times for these days vary. Most of the time, the
club is 18 and over or 21 and over.
There are many concerts, live DJ battles, and other special events,
so the cover charge depends on the event. On normal club nights,
the cover charge is usually $10 for 18 and over and $5 for 21
and over. |

Venus Nightclub

Venus Nightclub, near Ala Moana Shopping Center, is home to The
Playhouse Party. It’s also widely known for its Male Revue,
presented by Sensually Certified. Most nights are 18 and over.
Cover charge is $10 for 18 and over and $5 for 21 and over. Hours
range from openings at 8 or 10 p.m. until closing at 4 a.m. |

Wave Waikiki

Students, tourists, and locals comprise the crowd at the Wave,
Honolulu’s eclectic nightclub. Anything goes as far as
the dress-code. Flip-flops, shorts, and tank tops are acceptable.
Wet T-shirt and bikini contests occur occasionally. The 18-and-over
crowd is welcomed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Cover
charge is $10 for the 18-and-over crowd and $5 on weekdays, $7
on weekends, for 21 and over. |
