A multimedia exhibition entitled Transgressed Boundaries & Potent Fusions featuring the work of three local artists—Chris Mitts, George Newton, and Diana Jeon—opened at the HPU Art Gallery August 1 and will run through Sept. 24.

The three artists work in very divergent forms and mediums, but a common thread runs through their artistic processes: each actively works to transgress the boundaries of the media chosen in order to create, according to the artists, “something that becomes something more.” In doing so, they create a new narrative for the work, one that could not be told by use of the mediums in their traditional states, one that can only be told in the fusion of the traditional with the new.

Mitts works with the elegant forms of neutral-colored bamboo, and through alternative processing of photographs, achieves prints that no longer look like photographs but something other. These “other” prints no longer document the reality of the tree, but rather the possibilities of an “other” bamboo, a bamboo that is radiantly colored.

Newton works with everyday materials—those found at the hardware store or discount retailer—and transforms these pre-formed items from their ordinary use to sculptural works of grace and charm, far removed from the original purpose of the material.

Jeon’s work explores the intersection of experience and memory. She uses digital photography and video stills in the process of creating digital print collages that no longer resemble that which was originally photographed.
