New course: Environmental Com

by Dr. Jan Knight

“Accurate communication is crucial to understanding pressures on the natural environment,” according to Dr. Helen Varner, dean of the College of Communication.

In order to help people do just that, and in response to marketplace demands for graduates who can do it, the college has created a new course, Environmental Commnication, that aims to assist students from many disciplines in presenting environmental information to the public in accurate and understandable ways.

“ Students will study classic and contemporary environmental works in print, television, and film,” said Dr. Jan Knight, who developed the course. “And they will take occasional field trips to local natural areas."

A course adviser is Dr. Chris Winn, director of Marine and Environmental Science at HPU. Students will be introduced to the program’s work in Kane‘ohe Bay, which focuses on tracking changes in O‘ahu’s near-shore environment. As their final project, students will design materials aimed to educate the public about the Kane‘ohe Bay effort and its implications for the natural environment at large.

COM 3804, Environmental Communication, will be offered for the first time this fall from 12:30 p.m. to 1:55 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays downtown. Call 544-0829.
