HMSA,
Kaiser offer student health plans
Students don’t need to add health care
worries to their daily concerns. HPU has arranged student
health insurance plans with two local medical insurance carriers,
Kaiser Permanente and Hawai‘i Medical Services Association
(HMSA).

STDs on
the rise
The Hawai‘i Health Department reported
in October 2002, that STDs and STIs have increased in the
past three years after 20 years of steady decline. According
to the report, the top three STDs increasing in Hawai‘i
are chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

Student
loan interest at all-time low
From a financial stand point there has never
been a better time to go to college than right now. On July
1 the interest rate hit an all-time low of 3.37 percent for
all Stafford loans. Rates fell across the board in Parent loans,
Stafford, and Plus loans. Students with unsubsidized Stafford
loans will see their rates drop from 2.82 percent to 2.77 percent
while attending school.

Online courses
make education possible
An hour has passed and Laura Lewis, 49, completes
her test and checks her e-mail for the next assignment due.
As she starts the assignment, she is interrupted by a child’s
cry. She closes her assignment and tends to her motherly duties,
calling the baby “precious.”
