Mayoral candidates
present programs
This summer, Honolulu’s most prominent
mayoral candidates, Duke Bainum and Mufi Hannemann, appeared
in numerous forums to answer questions, clarify their reasons
for running, and summarize their plans for Honolulu if elected.

No one expects to be banned from a public library.
Carlos Hernandez didn’t and certainly not for the reason
he was given. According to Lois K. Perrin, legal director of
ACLU Hawai‘i, on May 18, Hernandez was surfing the Internet
at the Hawai‘i State Public Library when he was asked
to leave by a security guard.

Hawai‘i Pacific University awarded more
than 300 students associate, baccalaureate, and master degrees
at its 58th commencement ceremony on Thursday, August 19th
at the Waikiki Shell.

HPU plants peace
pole
As a global community with students hailing from
more than 100 countries and all 50 states coming together to
live and learn, HPU students, staff, and faculty commemorated
those who lost their lives in the events of Sept. 11, 2001
in “A Day of Peace” ceremony at the Hawai‘i
Loa campus at which the University officially planted a Peace
Pole presented to HPU by the Peace Corps.

Hawai‘i Pacific University is truly a
global learning community, bringing together students from
more than 100 countries. A global perspective is also at
the core of our College of International Studies. Established
in 1998, the College brings together academic programs in
the social sciences, modern languages, and teacher training
that all focus on international affairs and studies. It offers
majors in anthropology, international relations, international
studies, political science, and teaching English as a second
language; minors in geography, Japanese, and Spanish; and
an MA program in teaching English as a second language.
