HPU presents Broadway Bound

by Kalamalama staff

Under the direction of Joyce Maltby, HPU Theatre will kick off this season with Neil Simon’s hit comedy, Broadway Bound. This is the third part of Simon’s autobiographical trilogy about his alter ego, Eugene Jerome. In the play, Eugene and his older brother Stanley are trying to break into the world of professional comedy writing and simultaneously cope with the impending breakup of their family.

“Even though the time period of the play is 1949, the situations and the relationships are timeless,” said actress Sharon Adair.

“ Neil Simon is wonderful at writing ‘slice of life’ situations,” said Maltby.

“ The play is really about the American dream,” said first-time HPU Theatre actor, Derrick Calibre. “These characters are struggling with their dreams within the constructs of the social, cultural, family paradigms that are expected of them. They’re all struggling.”

The stellar cast is comprised of HPU regulars: Jim Tharp as Ben, the brother’s grandfather; Sharon Adair as Kate, their mother and Ben’s daughter; John Hunt as Jack, their father; and Virginia Jones as Blanche, Kate’s sister. New to the HPU stage but regulars in community theater around town, are Gene Defrancis as Eugene and Derrick Calibre as Stanley.

Broadway Bound plays Wednesdays through Sundays from Nov. 5 to Dec. 5.

The HPU Theatre is on the third floor of the Academic Center on the windward Hawai‘i Loa campus. Show times are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 4 p.m.

Reservations are recommended as seating is limited. To obtain tickets and information, call the box office at 375-1282. Student, military, and senior discounts are available.
