Chaplain's Corner
with Reverend Dale Burke

Finding the strength and resources to face the challenges that come our way is an important skill for any student who hopes to survive the rigors of getting a degree. Class deadlines, relationships, finances, balancing schedules, and finding time to relax all pull us in different directions and take an emotional and physical toll. When all this becomes overwhelming, where can we find the strength to keep going?

One of the most important resources we have is the people around us. Being able to confide in others who are sharing the same experiences can diffuse loneliness and the feeling that we are carrying these burdens all by ourselves. Knowing we are not alone goes a long way to helping us face our challenges.

Participating in University activities is an important way of enlarging our support system. But there are less organized ways to help ourselves and others. Be on the lookout for someone who might need a listening ear and offer it; add kind words of acknowledgement and encouragement. You might just make their day and yours as well!

Don’t underestimate the strength of your tradition of faith. It is a strong resource. Connecting with it connects us with the infinite resources of a loving God who is present in good times as well as challenging ones. Why not invite a friend, old or new, to go with you to experience your tradition of worship? Share the strength!
