EFP picnic promotes aloha, language use

HPU’s English Foundations Program (EFP) welcomed international students, old and new, to a festive “Aloha!” picnic at the Hawai‘i Loa campus Oct. 9. HPU faculty who teach English as a second language put on this annual picnic with help from the Pals organization and the International Teachers Organization (ITO).

TESL offers unique course

In the relative quiet of Summer 4, The Applied Linguistics (TESL) program offered the first-ever hybrid course at HPU. The first three weeks of AL 3801/6600 Group Dynamics in the Language Classroom was taught as a distance course using videoconferencing and WebCT. The last five weeks were taught face-to-face in a classroom setting while continuing to use WebCT. Five undergraduate and 11 graduate TESL students participated in this adventure with Visiting Professor Dr. Tim Murphey of Dokkyo University Japan.

HPU takes community service international

HPU is becoming better known every day for its emphasis on education that develops and international outlook. It enrolls students from more than 118 countries. It regularly presents international subjects, ideas, perspectives, and issues in the classroom as well outside it. Witness the recurring seminars on global citizenship, (the next one is Oct. 30 at the Hawai‘i Loa campus) and the biannual Intercultural Day festivals (the next one is Oct. 29, downtown).
