The No. 8-ranked HPU volleyball team is seeing
double as another of its players, Nadica Karleusa, junior outside
hitter, was named PacWest Player of the week, Oct. 4. Just the
week before, teammate Vera Oliveira, HPU setter, was honored
with the same award.
The honors come as no surprise to the pair who were both PacWest
Players of the Week last year, Oliveira’s was her third,
and Karleusa's is her second.
Karleusa, a member of last seasons PacWest All-Conference
Second Team and NCAA II AVCA Pacific Region honorable mention,
has been making quite an impact on the court this season. She
helped the Lady Sea Warriors sweep the Western New Mexico Mustangs
Oct. 1 in three sets, 30-28, 30-21, and 30-18. She contributed
a career-high 17 kills in addition to five digs and four blocks.
Teammates Flavia Brakling, Barbara Martin, and Paula Koikopolous
combined a total of 32 kills to gain the win.
Not to be outdone, Oliveira, the previous PacWest Player
of the Week award winner, picked up a total of 46 assists and 10
digs to aid the Lady Sea Warriors in their victory. But it was
the junior from Moloka‘i, Hawai‘i, Mahealani Rawlins,
who put the dent in the Mustangs offensive strategy. Rawlins,
HPU defensive specialist/setter, had a game high 11 digs from
the back-court to hold off the Mustangs in set three.
The Lady Sea Warriors sadly ended their winning streak Oct.
5 at the Neal Blaisdell Arena, against Chaminade University.
lost in three straight sets to the Silverswords
31-29, 31-29, 30-26, making it the first conference loss this season.
HPU’s volleyball team will head to Billings, Montana to face off against
the Yellow Jackets again, Oct. 15 and 16. The Lady Sea Warriors previously defeated
Montana State University-Billings Sept. 28, sweeping the Yellow Jackets in three
