HPU student creates local sports identity

On Nov. 1, Kanoa Leahy will officially become the sports anchor at KHON-2 television, on the highest-rated nightly news show in Hawai‘i. Quite an accomplishment for a 27-year-old undergraduate. This is just the next step for Leahy who was given the job as sports anchor and reporter with KITV-4 television at 21. “The opportunity was too good to pass up,” said Leahy. “HPU was really gracious to allow me to take the job and continue school.”


Wells named new Asst. AD, Harada joins staff

Kelly Wells was named HPU’s new assistant athletic director and assistant basketball coach on Sept. 7, capping a “summer of changes” for the HPU athletic department. Wells, a 33-year-old native of Morehead, Ky., re-joins his former college coach: athletic director and head basketball coach J.D. Barnett.


Friday Night Lights: Hope comes alive for small town America

When the lights come on Friday nights each fall at high schools across the country, it’s time for one thing: football. Friday Night Lights tells the story of the Permian High School Panthers and their quest for the 1988 Texas state football championship.


HPU cheerleader makes national magazine cover

A senior psychology major and member of the HPU national champion cheerleading team, has been named “Cheerleader of the Month” by American Cheerleader magazine.


HPU produces another PacWest player

The No. 8-ranked HPU volleyball team is seeing double as another of its players, Nadica Karleusa, junior outside hitter, was named PacWest Player of the week, Oct. 4. Just the week before, teammate Vera Oliveira, HPU setter, was honored with the same award.


HPU Green Team sets positive tone for soccer

With seven points in three opening games in the Hawaiian MISO-league, the HPU Green Team got the start it wanted. After tying the first game 0-0, on Sept. 19, against last season’s finalist, Lanikai Tuesday, Green followed up, on September 26, with a 3-0 win against Aloha Amazon.
