HPU cheerleader makes national magazine cover

by Kalamalama staff

A senior psychology major and member of the HPU national champion cheerleading team, has been named “Cheerleader of the Month” by American Cheerleader magazine.

Lori-Ann Amodo is a team captain and stunt perfomer on HPU’s coed cheer squad. A graduate of Moanalua High School, she remembers not being able to make it as a cheerleader.

“I wasn’t chosen to be a cheerleader,” Amodo remembers, “but I think God had something better planned. She got a scholarship to HPU through gymnastics.

“ She is a hard worker,” said HPU Head Cheer Coach Matt Parkey. “She doesn’t let anything get in her way.”

In April, the HPU cheerleaders placed first in their division at the National Cheerleaders Association Chick-fil-A Collegiate Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla., winning over hundreds of the top college teams in the country. HPU also took home the first-place trophy in the 2003 championship meet.

As an American Cheerleader magazine “Cheerleader of the Month,” Amodo has received a $1,000 scholarship from Bonne Belle and Soffe Sportswear.

“ She has a lot of heart and dedication,” said Parkey.
