Book Beat: Tools for research

by Janet Moelzer, reference librarian, Meader Library

Have you ever asked any of the following questions:

· Where can I get tips for planning my research project?

· What’s the difference between magazines and journals?

· Are there online tools to help my research and writing?

· How can I use periodical databases skillfully?

· What should I look for when evaluating information I find on the Web?

· What does plagiarism look like and how can I avoid it?

These are some of the many tools and skills you’ll learn from the Guide to Library Research: Hawai‘i Pacific University, third edition. This book, developed by the HPU libraries, is used in all Writing 1200 classes, and will help students with their research skills throughout their university experience.

If you have a copy from your writing class, keep it handy for future research assignments. If you’re new to HPU and don’t have a copy yet, it is available at the HPU Bookstore for anyone to purchase.

The Guide to Library Research covers information about the HPU libraries, their services and resources. You will learn general library information, like how a call-number is designed, what subject headings are, and how the online catalog works. You will find information about online research, including library resources via HPU Pipeline, helpful links to tutorials, and definitions of key terminology.

The “Research and Writing Tools” section gives a model for setting up your research paper strategy, the layering of information for your paper, APA and MLA style examples, and more.

So pick up a copy for ready reference—keep it by your computer! For each book sold a donation is made to a scholarship fund that supports HPU students—maybe you will be the recipient of one of these scholarships!!

And please remember: If you have a question, ask one of our friendly librarians—they love to help!
