As the HPU Service Learning program faculty begins
its second year of participation in the Systems of Service

on our service to the community and our contributions to the
academic learning of our students. |

Poker and
online gambling catch on
In 2003, Chris Moneymaker, an amateur, rose from
obscurity to win $2.5 million at The World Series of Poker
at Binion’s Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas. His victory
sparked the interest of amateur poker players everywhere. Maybe
the notion of “anybody” winning catches the public’s
attention. Over the past two years, many people have tried
to be that “anybody” by playing online at such
sites as Party Poker.com, Poker Room.com, and Paradise Poker.com.

Flying across
water! Is jet skiing breathtaking or obnoxious?
The wind and water rush by so fast they take
your breath away. It’s like a roller coaster on waves—you
bump up off the face of a wave and fly for 30 or 40 feet and
splash down to do it again, and again. What can be more fun
than flying over the open ocean in a jet ski at top speed?

Adventure, solitude
- Camping offers both
Imagine it’s early in the evening and you
and a small group of friends are trying to make a campfire.
You collect dry woods, put everything on a pile, and then hope
that the wind isn’t too strong to blow it out immediately.
You are successful and now gather around the fire. Everyone
unpacks their food—and soon, the typical smell of barbecue
hangs in the air. For dessert, you all brought marshmallows,
crackers, and chocolate. You hear the surf break on the cliffs,
the wind in the trees, birds sing, taste the salt in the breezy
air, and see the sun setting over the ocean. It’s a perfect
day out in nature, at a campground on the northeastern coast
of O‘ahu.
